Tales in Sombre Tones is a collaborative project between American author Sean Walter and British artist Karen Ruffles of Drawing in Dark. What started as a book combining their collective nightmares (and a few friendly monsters) has turned into a fully immersive show including readings with sign language interpretation, stop motion animation and more. Once of the key goals of the project is to reach audiences who would not otherwise be able to access this sort of experience and the purpose of this site is to allow everyone to enjoy elements of the shows from home.
More materials and news of additional elements being introduced are to come - to keep up with project developments and future tour dates, subscribe at the bottom of the page. To buy the book, featuring 24 illustrations to accompany 24 short horror stories, visit their websites or ask your local independent bookshop.
Karen Ruffles lives in Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, a perfect location for an artist with a love for the gothic side of horror. She specialises in charcoal and carbon pencil drawings, covering a wide range of subjects but her first love is the monsters who wander into her studio and in some cases, take up permanent residence. Original illustrations and prints from the book are available on her website Drawing in Dark
Sean Walter lives on the west coast of the United States, in the rainy city of Portland, Oregon. He's been writing about all things strange and twisted as a hobby since he was eight years old, and professionally for the last decade or so. The myriad of jobs he's had in his life, from manual labour jobs to EMT, bartender to bodyguard, lend realism and experience to his dark stories. Mad and loving it, you can join Sean on his adventures over at Sean Walter
